Dave and Gail: Proposed itinerary

We're home now. Check out some of what we actually did on our photo page.

United Arab Emirates (May 13 to May 22)

Spend lots of time playing with Joyce (middle of photo). Also do some relaxing and shopping and sight-seeing.

Europe (May 22 to June 19)

Thursday May 22, Paris to Jargeau: 150km in 1h33

Arrive in Paris 1:20. Avis pick us up from airport. Pick up van and drive to Jargeau (famous for andouille!). Shopping and settling in to van. Maybe wander into town for dinner.

Friday May 23, Jargeau to Le Mans: 248km in 4h27

Leave Jargeau early morning. Leisurely drive along river to check out castles and chateaus. 1st stop at Chateau de Chenonceau probably for 1-1/2 hours. 2nd stop at Amboise for lunch at Caveau des Vignerons d'Amboise (and to sample local wines). Then head to Tours to book campsite for Sunday night, before heading north to Le Mans. Go to race track to buy tickets and try to get camp site. Need to arrive early enough to find somewhere else to camp if the track site is full.

Saturday May 24, Le Mans MotoGP

Yay!

Sunday May 25, Le Mans MotoGP to Tours: 94km in 1h29

Yay! After race, head south to Tours for the night.

Monday May 26, Tours to Perigueux: 365km in 4h31

Start early morning. Stop for lunch at Cognac (near Saintes) and tour one of the distilleries (check with tourist office to see which ones are open). Drive to Perigueux, camping at Perigueux. Check out Perigueux late afternoon/early evening … old town (medieval) and Renaissance quarter.

Tuesday May 27, Perigueux to Sarlat (via Lascaux Caves): 119km in 2h31

Start early morning. Drive to Montignac to get tickets for Lascaux. Rest of day will depend on what time tour we're able to take of the caves. If there's time, follow the rivers to Sarlat (check out La Roque Gageac and Domme). Get to Sarlat in time to explore the town. Camping at Sarlat (potential Camping Les Perieres, Route de Ste-Nathalene).

Wednesday May 28, Sarlat to Rocamadour (Anniversary lunch at Lacave): 51km in 1h09

Early morning market in Sarlat, and may want to spend a bit of time exploring the town. Then head to Lacave for anniversary lunch at Le Pont de l'Ouysse. Head south to Rocamadour and camp at Rocamadour. Depending on how we feel, may do some sight-seeing this afternoon … or may just kick back and digest lunch!

Thursday May 29, Rocamadour to Carcassonne: 288km in 5h23

Do any remaining sight-seeing at Rocamadour. Also may go to look at Castelnau-Bretenoux. Head to Carcassonne via Tarn, stopping at either Albi or Castres for lunch. Camping in Carcassonne. Go into the town during the evening to see it all lit up.

Friday May 30, Carcassonne to Avignon: 260km in 2h34

Spend the morning exploring Carcassonne old town. Then drive to Avignon via Arles (maybe stop there for lunch). Camping in Avignon. Depending on what time we get in, may do some sight-seeing in the old town during the afternoon/evening.

Saturday May 31, Avignon to Grenoble:228km in 3h14

Spend the morning exploring Avignon (maybe do the 2 hour guided tour). Then head up to the mountains to Grenoble (via Orange). Lots of nice mountain driving. Camp in Grenoble.

Sunday June 1, Grenoble to Turin: 253km in 3h57

Depending on weather, start the day by heading to the lookout at Les Deux Alpes. Drive through Briancon into Italy. Yay! Drive through the mountains to Turin. Camp in Turin. Chances are that not much will be open on a Sunday.

Monday June 2, Turin to Genoa: 201km in 3h55

Tour around Turin in the morning (check out Piazza Castello). Must have coffee and chocolate while we're here. Drive to Genoa via Alba (medieval city with truffles) and Barolo (to drink wine). Camp the night at Genoa. Head into town to sight-see and get Dave some pesto!

Tuesday June 3, Genoa to Parma/Modena: 224 km in 4h27

Early morning start. Head along coast and maybe stop at Camogli and Portofino (depends on what time it is, and how long it takes to get in). Afterwards, head north to Parma (ham and cheese) and Modena (balsamic vinegar). We're visiting during the Balsamico festival, so check with the tourist office to see what festival things we can do. We may also be able to tour of a parmesan factory. After checking at the tourist office, we'll decide where to camp for the night.

Wednesday June 4, Parma/Modena to Bologna: 40km in 0h41

Maybe do a Balsamico festival thing or cheese tour this morning. After that, drive to Bologna. Go on Ducati factory tour and check out Piazzas Maggiore & Nettuno. Camp in Bologna.

Thursday June 5, Bologna to The Mugello: 73km in 1h32

Drive to the Mugello race track (Scarperia) and get tickets for the race. We then need to find somewhere nearby to camp for the next few days (the main Mugello tourism office in Borgo San Lorenzo). After we get sorted out, drive around the area looking at the old Medici villas and check out a few of the other sights.

Friday June 6, The Mugello

Tour through the Mugello wineries. General sight-seeing once we've had enough wine (olive oil making, knife making, barrel making, etc.).

Saturday June 7, Mugello MotoGP

Yay!

Sunday June 8, Mugello MotoGP to Lucca: 96km in 1h11

Yay! After the race head to Lucca for the night.

Monday June 9, Lucca to Marseille: 555km in 5h27

Early morning start. Lots of driving today. Lunch at Diana Marina (near Imperia). Stop in Aix for a bit of sight-seeing. On to Marseille for sight-seeing, dinner and camping.

Tuesday June 10, Marseille to Barcelona: 498km in 4h32

May spend a bit of time in Marseille (depending on how much we saw yesterday), but head out fairly early. Cross into Spain. yay! Stop in Figueres for lunch and to check out Dali museum. Need to find camp site when we arrive in Barcelona. First stop is El Masnou. If we can't get in there, try near the airport. Depending on what time we get settled, may do some sight-seeing.

Wednesday June 11, Barcelona

Tourist day around Barcelona: Parc Guell, Maritime Museum, Chocolate Museum, History Museum, Absinthe Bar, etc.

Thursday June 12, Barcelona

Head to race circuit to collect tickets. There's free entry today for everyone with a 3 day ticket. Depending on how much there is to do at the track, may head back into Barcelona to be tourists.

Friday June 13, Catalunya MotoGP

Yay!

Saturday June 14, Catalunya MotoGP

Yay!

Sunday June 15, Catalunya MotoGP to Narbonne: 239km in 2h15

Yay! Have a quick dinner after the race, and then head back to France. Stop for the night when we're tired.

Monday June 16, Narbonne to Paris: 786km in 7h07

Leave very early. Huge driving day on motorways. Stopping for rests, but no sight-seeing. Should make it to Paris late afternoon. Camping at Bois de Boulogne.

Tuesday June 17, Paris

Not likely to feel like an early start! Maybe a good day for the Seine cruise. May just decide to sit in a park and watch the world go by.

Wednesday June 18, Paris

Walking tours and any other things that catch our interest. So many things to fit in before we leave tomorrow!

Thursday June 19, Paris to Melbourne

Get everything packed up and organised in the morning. Maybe go out for a nice lunch before heading off to return van and fly home (Avis will drive us to airport). Fly out at 3:30 pm.
